A 40-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Geruwa village under the Bodam police station limits, about 35 kms from here in the wee hours of the day, the police sources said.

The victim, Ghasiram Murmu, a driver, left for work at 5 AM on a bicycle and came across a wild tusker barely 200 yards away from his house in Jirigora tola, officer-in-charge of Bodam police station Virendra Toppo said.

The pachyderm attacked Murmu and trampled him to death, he said.

A large number of villagers put up a road block protesting against the incident, demanding adequate compensation to the victim’s family.

The blockade was lifted after Forest department officials provided immediate relief of Rs 20,000 with assurance to extend the benefit as per government guidelines.

The police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem, Toppo added.
