Scientists from the Centre for Ecological Science at the India Institute of Science, Bengaluru and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune have sequenced the entire gnome of ,an Asian elephant, and have also mapped its transcription or the section of genes active in a particular cell. While more than 95 per cent of the genes were found to be similar to the African elephant, 1,500 bases that are unique to the Asian elephant were also found.
