Measures taken to minimize human-elephant conflict (Sri Lanka)

Measures will be taken to minimize human-elephant conflict.  Director General of the Department of Wild life Conservation H D Rathnayaka told the SLBC that an array of programmes have been implemented to minimize the conflict.  The major initiative is erecting electrical fences.  According to the Director General, 2900 kilometers of fence will be erected in different parts of the country where human-elephant conflict is witnessed.  Mr. Rathnayaka also said that an elephant conservation center is also in the offing in Horowpathaana area.  2300 acres of land has been allocated for the project.

The Director General also said that the law will be strengthened to nab the people who are illegally holding elephants.  Another programme is being carried out to set up National Wild life Parks.  Director General said that 26 such parks are being established and will be available to local and foreign tourists.
