Mozambican police are investigating whether an ivory smuggling ring is operating through Doha after two Chinese nationals planning to travel to Qatar were detained in the southern African country in possession of 104 kilograms (230 pounds) of elephant tusks.

The suspects were held Oct. 3 in the northern Mozambican city of Nampula, police spokesman Inacio Dina told reporters Tuesday in the capital, Maputo. In May, Mozambican police seized a record haul of 340 elephant tusks and 65 rhino horns and arrested two Chinese nationals.
