A herd of about 50 elephants has been sowing panic in Mossurize district, southern Manica province, Notícias reports this Wednesday (14-09). It is believed that the elephants come from a conservation area in Zimbabwe.

“The elephants entered the district of Mossurize from Machaze last week,”  district administrator Fernando Samuel confirmed.

Samuel said that the elephants were devouring crops and destroying granaries in the villages of Mabudo, Chicambue and Gunhe. “There are three areas where elephants are harassing residents, but we are on top of events,” he said.

The Mossurize District Administration is on the ground, Samuel said, cited by Notícias. Personnel from the District Service for Economic Activities and from the wildlife sector were creating barricades and introducing other ways to repel the animals, as a way of restoring tranquillity within the affected communities, he said.

In July of this year, reports emerged of a herd of 50 elephants from Zimbabwe creating disturbances in Machaze district.
