Humane Society International (HSI), India, on Tuesday urged the AP forest department to immediately release a young male elephant that was captured and moved to the Tirupati zoo on October 1, 2016.
A letter was written to R G Kalaghatgi, PCCF (HoFF), AP forest department, Guntur, and Rajiv Kumar Srivastava, IG PE, MoEFCC, New Delhi, pointing out that there was no evidence of the elephant having injured or killed any person before.
HSI’s campaign manager-wildlife, C Samyutka said, “India already has close to 3,500 elephants in captivity. Hence, it would not be in the interest of wildlife welfare to place another elephant in captivity.
