The Attorney General (AG) of Sri Lanka today indicted the venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero over the illegal possession of an elephant calf.

Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of police in March arrested the Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera of the Alan Mathiniyaramaya Temple in Polhengoda for allegedly possessing the elephant calf without a valid license.

The Colombo Magistrate Court remanded the Thera and released him on bail after few days.

Earlier, the Thera filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an Interim Order preventing the Police from arresting him over a magisterial inquiry into the alleged illegal possession of a baby elephant.

The Thera in his petition said that he had kept the baby elephant that had been abandoned at the temple following a pageant held in 2014.
