A tusker that was being chased, has trampled a woman to death near the Jawalagiri reserved forest, 53 km from here, officials said Saturday.

The tusker that was chased from Soolagiri trampled the woman, who was returning after collecting firewood on Friday evening, in the presence of villagers.

The tusker was found near Hosur, a few days ago, before it moved to Palavathimmanapalli village, near Chinnar, 25 km from Krishnagiri, raiding farms and triggering panic.

On Friday, the Jumbo tried to stray into Soolagiri town, on Chennai-Bangalore national highway. But alert people, who saw it in the early hours, chased the animal away.

A team of forest officials were engaged in monitoring the movement of the stranded pachyderm, Divisional Forest Officer M.Ulaganathan said.
