GUWAHATI: The tusker that had been stuck in a swamp at the Amchang wildlife sanctuary for the last several days was rescued today. Forest officials said the elephant, which was being treated for injuries on its legs, regained enough strength to come up to the shore.

Pradipta Baruah, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Guwahati, told this newspaper that the Forest Department in order to keep the strength of the tusker intact had served several doses of vitamin and antibiotics orally in the last few days.

“Even bananas laced with medicines were served to the elephant, which helped it maintain its strength,” said Baruah, adding the male animal had fallen into the swamp after it had received injury in its leg.

Baruah said doses of painkillers were also injected and efforts were taken to keep the nearly 12-year-old pachyderm stress-free to the extent possible. “The animal after coming out of the swamp went into the forest where his movement is being monitored,” he added.
