A wild tusker today trampled two persons, including a minor boy, to death and seriously injured another person in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, official sources said.
Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Baripada, Arun Patra said the deceased have been identified as Jhoteswar Mohanta (12) of Ambagadia and Kshetramani Dhal (50) of Dantiamuha villages under Betanati forest range.
Sources said the elephant first attacked the boy, who had gone out to relieve himself, killing him on the spot. It then attacked the two women, who had gone there to collect minor forest produce in the nearby forest.
The injured woman has been shifted to the nearby hospital for treatment, sources added.
The irate jumbo also damaged the boundary wall of the gram panchayat building at Dantiamuha, sources said.
The tusker has retreated into the nearby Gandigada forests. Forest personnel were making frantic efforts to chase it away from the area, Patra said.
