A woman and a Baba were trampled to death by a tusker at two different places under the Bisra forest area in Sundargarh district on Tuesday.

Sources said Chekri Naik(40) and her husband Nehru Naik of Budhikani village had gone to the Mahipani reserve forest for collecting some food items. At around 8 am, a tusker approached them crushed Chekri to death. Nehru, who managed to save his life, informed forest officials though his mobile. Then forest officials along with police came and recovered the body.
The Forest Department provided Rs 15,000 to Nehru Naik for funeral rites.“The family will get rest Rs 2.85 lakh after necessary formalities as per the provision,” said Bisra Range Officer SC Sahani.
At around 2 pm, the same tusker killed a Baba, Thumba Singh (70) of Birnajhar village, on a hilltop in the same Mahipani reserve forest area. The Baba was possibly performing a Puja when the incident occurred.
However, forest officials couldn’t recover the Baba’s body due to the tusker’s presence there. “Since it is evening time and the tusker is present on the hilltop, it won’t be possible for us to go to the hilltop to recover the body. We will recover the body on Wednesday morning,” said Sahani.
However, he said that a forest squad is keeping close watch on the tusker’s movement.
