After being driven out of the district a couple of days back, a 15 strong group of tuskers re-entered the district in the wee hours on Sundayand went on rampage. The tuskers entered the local High School building in the Gurua police station area of the district and caused extensive damage to the school building. It being wee hours, the school building was empty.

The same group also caused damage to standing crops in the Banke Bazar police station area. Confirming the re-entry of the tuskers in the area, Sherghati SDO Jyoti Kumar said that no major damage has been caused to the school building. Only some doors and windows have been damaged.

The SDO also said that a team of forest officials have gone to the spot and the tuskers are being chased away. One tusker, according to the SDO, was left behind from the group with serious leg injury. Attempts are being made to tranquilize the injured tusker and transport it to Patna for treatment and rehabilitation.

According to officials, untrained villagers of the affected area have made the situation worse by tackling the four footed invaders on their own. The villagers, in some cases only ended up with antagonizing the tuskers. Two villagers were injured a few days back. District magistrate Kumar Ravi has directed local officials to sanitize the villages and educate the villagers about the dos and dont’s in such crisis.
