Wild jumbo menace on the rise (Sri Lanka)

Attacks by wild elephants are increasing daily in Ashraff Nagar re -settlement village in the Addalaichenai Divisional Secretariat Division.

 
An elderly farmer was attacked by an elephant at Ashraff Nagar on Saturday around 8.30 pm. Ibralebbe Kamarudeen, 69, was rushed to the Oluvil District Hospital. The farmer had gone to the Ashraff Nagar Jummah Mosque when the elephant suddenly attacked him.
 
A. Katheeja Ummah, 52, attacked by an elephant at her house in Oluvil Ashraff Nagar was seriously injured and admitted to the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital. Wild elephants have also destroyed coconut saplings, houses and fences in Ashraff Nagar. Paddy fields, home gardens and other crops have also been damaged by wild elephants.
 
Villagers have brought this to the notice of the authorities. They urge the authorities to set up an electric fence to prevent wild elephants entering the villages.
 
Eastern Provincial Council Health and Social Services Minister A.L.M.Naseer visited Ashraff Nagar to look into the needs of affected families on Sunday.
