The Wildlife Conservation Department says that wildlife officials have been dispatched for inquiring about keeping two elephant calves in a hideout in a plot of land in Hiriwadunna in Kegalle.
WCD Director General H. D. Ratnayake told our news team that information about this had been reported to him as well.
The Nature Study Centre has received a report to the effect that two elephant calves are being kept concealed in a pit dug in a plot of land belonging to a businessman in Hiriwadunna.
Nature Study Centre National Coordinator Raveendra Kaariyawasam told our news team that these elephant calves are aged respectively about three years and five years.
The NSC national coordinator said that he too had informed the WCD officials about this.
Our news team inquired about this from WCD Director General H. D. Ratnaayake.
He said that he dispatched officials to the site on the very day the relevant information about this had been reported .
In addition the WCD has taken steps to adopt a new method for issuing annual permits for elephants in the future.
The WCD DG said that he hoped to have a DNA test carried out to confirm the elephant’s identity.
