A Zambian national, who was recently found in possession of four illegal elephant tusks, has been remanded in custody in Maun while awaiting trial, Gabzfm radio station, which is based in Gaborone, reported on Tuesday afternoon.
Botswana police detective Silas Motsisi of the narcotics unit in Maun told Gabz Fm news that the 50 year-old man was arrested following a tip-off.
The man has been charged with unlawful possession of government trophy by the Maun Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, police in Maun say the number of cases of Zambian nationals in illegal possession of elephant tusks is on the rise in Ngamiland.
He said although the Zambians had been conniving with some local residents in the illicit trade, it appeared the locals protected them when they were arrested.
